LAWNS should really be left alone now or have their final winter cut very soon (grass left taller, not close cropped), but there is still plenty to do - we have been weeding beds, pruning trees, clearing leaves, shaping, edging, re-potting and still removing the last of the green summer excess around our S.W. London base.

INDOORS you could be planting Amaryllis and Paperwhites this week - if started now (they come cold forced) they should bloom in time for Christmas. Other bulbs need a prolonged cold snap a.k.a Winter in order to get going in 3 months time, so most should really be outside in the ground now or in the next couple of weeks. If you don't have time to plant them you can even put them in the fridge, so they get a cold snap before you sort them next year.

OUTDOORS trench planting is a good technique to get swathes of bulbs in quickly across areas of your garden especially if you don't have much time. Daffodils, tulips, crocuses, irises can be layered en-masse to produce successions of flowering that last into May.

FRONT GARDENS this week I have been prepping window boxes with seasonal elegance in mind. Some of the plants on my list this week for a cool but understated display:
  • Skimmia japonica 'Kew White' - Evergreen with dense, glossy, dark green leaves. Features tight clusters of creamy-white flower buds that provide great structure and light colour all winter long
  • Euonymus 'Emerald Gaiety' - Small, tough, evergreen leaves with striking creamy-white edges. The white margins often blush pink or rosy-red when exposed to cold or frost, adding beautiful subtle colour. Tassel Fern - Beautiful, robust, evergreen fern with large, elegant, deeply cut fronds. It offers soft, intricate texture and a lush green shade that thrives even in low winter light.
  • Helleborus (Christmas Rose) - Produces beautiful, single, cup-shaped white flowers from late December/January, contrasting with the dark green, leathery foliage.
  • Carex 'Everest' - Evergreen ornamental grass with arching, fountain-like blades of white and green. It provides graceful, movement-filled texture and helps disguise the edge of a window box.
