Geraniums

Geraniums as I know them here in the UK are actually Pelargoniums. They were introduced from South Africa in the 17th century. Grow them in pots if you intend to keep them over Winter or plant them straight into your beds as annuals for elegant blooms lasting all year long until frosts hit late in the year. They are available for as little as £3 each in markets, garden centers, online and elsewhere.  Cheap enough to use as bedding plants and put in en-masse they serve as handsome underplanting and stand well on their own. Instant year long colour, eye catching leaves and steams, a refined scent - they have lots to offer.

A Classy Bedding Plant

Why are Geraniums so well-suited as bedding plants?

    • Long Blooming Period:They flower from late spring/early summer well into autumn.
    • Wide Range of Colors: Available in rich shades of red, pink, white, and bi-colors.
    • Ease of Care: Relatively low-maintenance, making them ideal for gardeners of all levels.
    • Sun-loving: Thriving in sunny locations.

How to grow and care for your Geraniums

    • Planting:
      • Choose a sunny spot (at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight).
      • Well-drained soil is essential. Improve drainage with compost or organic matter.
      • Space plants 12-18 inches apart.
    • Watering:
      • Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
      • Water deeply at least once a week, more in warmer months.
    • Feeding:
      • Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
    • Deadheading:
      • Regularly remove faded blooms to encourage more flowers.
    • Pruning:
      • Pinch back stems to promote bushier growth.
    • Overwintering:
      • Pelargoniums are not frost-hardy. Bring them indoors or take cuttings before temperatures drop.

Variegated - Mrs Pollock Geranium. The variegation gets deeper with ample sunlight
